  1. What is the difference between supplications, prayers, and intercessions? 1 Timothy 2:1 says, "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men"

It is my understanding that each of these words refers to a different depth of communication, and the order of intensity in that communication is prayer, supplication, and intercession- with intercession representing the deepest intensity. There is also an aspect of position. With prayer and supplication, we are before God on behalf of the person/ situation. In intercession, we are between God and the person /situation that intercession is being made for.

I will give three brief examples.

Suzie has a tight flight schedule on her way to assist a parent who is ill, and is worried she will miss her connection. She tells me this and I "pray" about the situation. I converse with God about this. I might say, "Father, You are the One who created time. I recognize that time is not a problem for You, and I'm asking that You would make the time sufficient for Suzie to make her connection between flights." I am honoring God (worshiping Him) and asking Him to be the solution to Suzie's difficulty. I am conversing with God about Suzie and her flight.

Upon arriving at the home of her parents, Suzie finds out her mother has been taken to the hospital in uncertain condition and that they will have to run tests. Now I recognize more is involved than a simple recuperation from a flu. I begin to go into supplication: meaning earnest prayer, favor, or entreaty, a request, the idea of approaching for a favor. I could ask that wise physicians are brought forth, that tests are performed expertly and quickly, that God would comfort Suzie and her family as they await results. I ask that God would heal Suzie's mother.

Test results show a life-threatening tumor. In talking to Suzie, I find out that her mother hasn't accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Rightly speaking, Suzie's mother has no right to God's covenant provision for healing. I now move into a place of intercession, I step between God and this woman and I reason with God (Is.1:18) on her behalf. I'm going to remind the Lord that He is the Father of all mercies, and put Him to His word which says because of the cleanliness of my hands (Job 22:30) I can ask for this woman's life (Jude 23). I'm going to reason with Him that He desires that none would perish, that He deserves the praise and adoration of this woman. I am asking that she be given time to come to godly sorrow and repentance, and even to serve Him.

I believe these examples demonstrate the progression of prayer, supplication, and intercession. The following are definitions and some scriptures concerning these words:

In the O.T. (Old Testament) two Hebrew words are translated "prayer." They are [6419], [7878], [8605] meaning to pray, entreat, ponder, converse, commune, complain, declare, meditate, talk with, supplication.

Genesis 20:17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants, and they bare children.

In the N.T. (New Testament) the Greek words translated "prayer" are [1162] and [4335], meaning a petition, prayer, request, worship, by implication, an oratory, pray earnestly.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray for one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

In the O.T. there are two Hebrew words translated "supplication" They are [8469] and [8467] meaning earnest prayer, favor, or entreaty.

Hebrews 5:7 "Who in the days of His flesh, when He [Jesus] offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to save Him from death and was heard in that He feared."

Psalm 28:6 "Blessed be the Lord, because He hath heard the voice of my supplications"

In the New Testament (N.T.) there are two words that are translated "supplication" They are [1162] and [2428] petition, a request, the idea of approaching for a favor, entreaty.

Intercession in the O.T. is [6293] The same word is also translated "intercessor." It means to impinge, by accident or violence, or by importunity, to entreat, to fall upon, to light upon, to meet together, to reach.

Webster's 12th Collegiate Dictionary To impinge: to drive into, to thrust, to strike at, make to fall, dash, clash, to hit on, upon, or against something, to make inroads or encroach on the property or rights of another.

Is. 59:16 "And He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor [6293]: therefore His arm brought salvation unto Him; and His righteousness, it sustained Him."

In the N.T. the Greek words for intercession are [1793] and [5241] meaning to confer with, to entreat in favor or against, to deal with, to intercede on behalf of, to make intercession for

Rom. 11:2 "God hath not cast away His people which He foreknew. Wot ye not what the
Scripture saith of Elias? How he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying . . ."

  3. Should Satanic Retaliation be a legitimate concern?

Since retaliation and backlash are not scriptural words, although commonly used by the Body of Christ in referring to what the enemy will do to us when we carry out the assignments of our God, we will study them from our modern language.

    Webster’s Dictionary defines

    ·     “retaliation” as “to return like for like; especially to get revenge.”   Synonyms of retaliation are “counterstrike, reprisal, punishment, countercharge, vengeance.”

    ·      “backlash” is defined as  “a quick, sharp, recoil [to drive back]

Would the enemy like to get revenge on us?  Most likely, does he however, posses enough power to return “like for like” and is he able to “drive us back” as the army of the Lord?  Let’s look at what scripture shows us.

“Vengeance (1557 retribution, revenge, punishment, vindication) belongeth unto Me, I will recompense, saith the Lord.”  (Hebrews 10:30)

“The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited (6485 to rend, open the mouth, deliver, utter) with evil.” (Proverbs 19:23)

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?  When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.  Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.  One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock.  And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in His tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.  (Psalm 27:1-6)

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help
(aid, to surround, protect He5828/5826). My help (He5828/5826) cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth (to hedge about, to guard, to protect, to attend to, observe, watchmen He8104)  thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth (8104) Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper (8104): the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve (8104) thee from all evil: he shall preserve (8104) thy soul. The Lord shall preserve (8104) thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.  (Psalm 121:1-8)

O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered (5526- to entwine as a screen; cover, defense, defend, hedge in, join together, set, shut up) my head in the day of battle.  (Psalm 140:7)

“If the Lord delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither ye the people of the land; for they are bread (3899/3898 to feed on, to battle [as destruction], overcome, prevail) for us: their defense (6738 shade, defense) is departed  (5493 to turn off, decline, leave undone, pluck away, remove, withdraw, be without) from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.”  (Numbers 14:8-9)

“No weapon (3627 artillery, armor, any apparatus, something prepared) that is formed against thee shall prosper (6743 to push forward, to come mightily, be profitable); and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment, thou shalt condemn (7561 to declare wrong, to disturb, to violate, to make trouble, to vex). This is the heritage of the saints of the Lord, and their righteousness is of Me, saith the Lord.”  (Isaiah 54:17)

“Behold, I give unto you power (1849 privilege (in the sense of ability), force capacity, competency, mastery, freedom, magistrate, jurisdiction, right) to tread (3961 to trample, tread down under foot, to hit as with a single blow, smite, strike) on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power (1411 force, ability, might, strength, violence) of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt (91 to be unjust, do wrong (morally, socially, physically) injury, hurt, do/suffer/take wrong) you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject (5292 to subordinate, to obey, to be under obedience, subject to, submit self unto) unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”  (Luke 10:19-20)

“Finally, my brethren, be strong (1743 to empower, enable, increase in strength) in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand (2476 abide, continue, hold up) against the wiles (3180 methods, trickery, lying in wait) of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand (436 to stand against, to oppose, resist – NOTE this word is where we get our modern day word antihistamine) in the evil day, and having done all, to stand (2476).”   (Ephesians 6:10-13)

Our Kingdom work in not done in of ourselves but in the empowering, enabling strength and might of the Lord.  Whereas we are seated in heavenly places with our God we are then not battling for victory but from victory.

Provision has been set in place for us to withstand our enemies.

“Who are kept (5432-to be a watcher in advance, to mount guard as a sentinel, to post spies at the gates, to hem in, keep with a garrison) by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”  (I Peter 1:5)

~  Some have thought that Paul suffered a thorn in the flesh because he
engaged in spiritual warfare. This is not what the Bible teaches. Scriptures
says that Paul was allowed to suffer a thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7) lest he
become exalted by the great revelations he had.

~  Fearing that the enemy can retaliate against us at his will is having a belief
that the darkness is greater than the light, that weapons fashioned against
us can prosper and that we are not hidden in Christ. It serves to lead us to
operate in fear of punishment and unbelief.

~  Where Satan can interfere in our lives is when we’re in sin.   Such as
                  unforgiveness.  (2 Cor. 2:10-11)

In conclusion, this is not to say that there is no “cost” in spiritual warfare. Jesus said, “count the cost” (Luke 14:26-33) before we undertake ANY endeavor. No matter what our calling, there will be tests of endurance in that arena. No matter what our ministry, we are called to take up the cross and follow Jesus.
